Andy Rooney: Let the people vote on everything!

I must admit, there are times that this sounds like a good idea. That is, considering the special interests controlling our Congress. But then again, think about it... The people are being fed information by an increasingly corporate-controlled media. The people respond to sound bites and blurbs.

Take for example what I've learned about Iran and Tehran. I used to think Iran the most god-forsaken place in the world. I still despise their theocratic government, however my friend over there has opened my eyes to that country. If the government could change, it would top my list of places to visit. I'd love to go to places like Mt. Damavand and visit the ruins at Persepolis. Yeah, I know Iran's Pres and government are trying to lure Westerners to travel over there, but it would be hard to go to a place where there are organized demonstrations chanting "Death to America!". I fully realize that in their homes and away from the public, that many young Iranians don't hold that view. They might be playing basketball or listening to hip hop music on their I-Pods.

I also hope that most of the people over there don't think we live lives like some of our celeberaties or that we are all criminals. I say that because all you have to do is log on to 9 News to see multiple murders, child molestations and other crimes. We hang out all of our dirty laundry for everyone to view! I'm kinda ashamed to show those sites to my friend. I can refer him to Chamber of Commerce sites, but we're not all perfect like that, either. No, the streets are not paved in gold. Yet, after many conversations with him, I definately conclude our life is far better here. This is not to belittle the proud Persian heritage, but I think he'd probably agree. Someday that may change. We can always hope.
